Outsourced COFA Support Services for Law Firms
Your COFA obligations are personal and non-delegable. We provide independent verification, maintain your breach register, and document your compliance — giving you the objective evidence to protect your practice and your practising certificate.
Without Independent COFA Support
When a COFA lacks detached, objective structural support, the practice operates under acute regulatory stress and invisible financial vulnerabilities.
With COFA support for Law Firms
We deliver the independent verification frameworks and technical compliance monitoring required to protect your COFA and strengthen firm-wide governance.
Relying solely on internal cashier reports without independent, secondary validation of client ledgers.
Independent Ledger Audits — We conduct detached, monthly reviews of your client accounting to catch errors your daily operational team might miss.
An unmanaged or completely empty SRA breach register, creating an immediate red flag for visiting auditors.
Breach Register Maintenance — We implement structured tracking to identify, assess, and document transaction anomalies correctly and safely.
Valuable partner time consumed by tedious, repetitive checking tasks instead of firm leadership and billable work.
COFA Administrative Support — We handle the compliance groundwork, leaving you free to act as strategic director rather than part-time auditor.
Uncertainty over whether your daily processing workflows truly mirror the latest SRA Accounts Rules requirements.
SRA Rules Alignment — We verify your tech stack and workflows are structurally aligned to serve as an ironclad, transparent audit trail.
How We Support Your COFA
We embed into your governance rhythm without disrupting fee-earner workflows — providing independent verification, maintaining your breach register, and producing the documentation that proves proactive compliance to the SRA.
Historical Compliance Health Check
We begin by conducting a meticulous, detached review of your historical client accounting data. We isolate hidden compliance exposure, locate legacy reconciliation flaws, and pinpoint exactly where your current daily processing could leave your COFA vulnerable to SRA challenge.
Breach Register & Control Implementation
We resolve active process deficiencies by introducing tailored check-sheets, structured review templates, and formal breach-logging workflows. We cleanse systemic recording errors across your systems, ensuring your financial data provides an absolute, uncompromised source of truth.
Monthly COFA Review Packs
We establish a regularised monthly cadence of ledger sampling, transaction validation, and administrative support. This produces robust, recurring review packs for your COFA — permanently preserving your practice's regulatory integrity and long-term security.
FAQs
Clear answers to common queries regarding independent COFA support and SRA financial compliance.
A COFA — Compliance Officer for Finance and Administration — is a role required by the SRA for all authorised firms. The COFA must be a manager or employee of the firm and is personally responsible for taking all reasonable steps to ensure the firm complies with the SRA Accounts Rules, for recording any known or reasonably knowable breaches, and for reporting material breaches to the SRA. The personal and non-delegable nature of this obligation means that a COFA who fails to maintain adequate compliance oversight can face individual regulatory consequences, even if they did not personally cause the breach.
No — and this is an important distinction. The COFA role is a personal regulatory appointment that must be held by a manager or employee of the authorised firm. It cannot be outsourced to a third party. What we provide is independent support for your designated COFA: auditing the work done by your cashiers, maintaining breach records, producing monthly compliance reporting packs, and identifying systemic risks before they become regulatory events. The responsibility remains within your firm; we give your COFA the independent evidence and documentation needed to discharge that responsibility with confidence.
When the SRA conducts a financial compliance review, inspectors typically request evidence of your most recent three-way reconciliations (signed and dated), your breach register for the preceding 12 months, your client account withdrawal approval records, and evidence of how the firm responds to and remediates identified breaches. A firm that has regular, documented reconciliations, a maintained breach register (even one that shows minor technical issues properly handled), and clear approval controls will fare significantly better than one that has clean accounts but cannot produce the documentation to prove it. Our COFA support service is designed to produce precisely that documentation.
